Spain’s geographical location, as a peninsula separated from the rest of Western Europe by the Pyrenees Mountains, was an important factor in the development of medieval architecture. In addition, seven centuries of Islamic domination left an indelible mark on Spanish architecture.
At the beginning of the Middle Ages, internal political fighting was common in Spain. In 711, however, a dramatic event took place that changed the course of Spanish history: an Islamic army invaded Andalusia. In a very short time, Islamic domination extended over almost the entire Iberian Peninsula. Two years later, Spain was ruled by the Caliphs of Damascus.
To resist Islamic forces, Christians in Spain built strongholds known as “castillos” or castles. Spanish castles were usually symmetrical in design. Different colored stone was sometimes used, creating beautiful patterns within the curtain walls.
Islamic influence can be seen in many elements, such as rounded towers, leaning doors, as well as in the masonry.
Germanic influence can also be seen in some fortifications in areas of northern Spain.
At one time there were as many as 10,000 castles in Spain. Today, however, only about 6,000 are left. Many have been restored and conserved, but others are in ruins.
At CastillosNet, we invite you to explore them in our photo albums.
